"I enjoy the film for the way that it captures the spirit of the original (plenty of integrity here!) and for the stunning location photography."

Well said, Roger! No argument from me on that score. And thank you for the additional information too.

Although it is easy to focus on the mistakes and additions of the film - I always found the near collision with the steamer to be especially offensive - it is better to focus on the good points like the scenery, and some of the characters who were very well cast. I also enjoyed the cheerful music, and thought it set the right tone for the film.

I gave away my VHS tape of the film after my English friend gave me a UK DVD version. As discussed on Tarboard in the past, I have a regionless DVD player and so does my friend, so we exchange lots of films. I rather delighted in showing her around the lake District in 2008 where she had never been, including riding on the Tern and the Gondola, and hiking through the woods to the Dogs Home and to Peel Island. Ah, the joys that Arthur Ransome brought into so many of our lives!
