Just reread your commment with the line "not so very old"
Despite this line I always thought of Captain Flint as being 'relatively' old.
I always thought of him as the random old 'uncle' you inherit who has no children of their own but have reached the age they have no interest in having any children of their own. But of course I could be wrong.
