Trying to place The Lake in real geography is never wholly satisfying. Given that at the start of PP we are told that the branch from Strickland Junction (Oxenholme) is ten miles long, I think that this means that The Lake is the most easterly water in the area i.e. where Windemere is to be found.
I am interested in the elements of Coniston Water that people can see in The Lake other than the Peel Island harbour and the mouth of the Amazon R. It has a sort of Horseshoe Cove, true, but the Windermere one is much better.
The best guide to the ages of Jim and Molly seems to be the suggestion that they would be at least ten and probably less than 18 in 1901 when they climbed the Matterhorn. Somehow, I have always felt that Jim was the elder. Also Jim was at an age to want to carve Ben Gunn's name in the cave before 1900, as he told the Swallows making him around 15 at the time of the climb. Possibly, since Jim is something of a self-portrait, he was intended to be around 45 in SA which would fit.
To guess the Walker natives' ages, possibly an expert in RN affairs could suggest the age-range of promotions in the peacetime Navy
