'Swamazons' is an annual race around Swallow Island in Secret Water (also known as the Walton Backwaters, near Walton-on-the-Naze). It's run by the Old Gaffers Association.

I did last year's race in my 1980s racing dinghy (not a gaff rig at all) and had the best sailing day of my life, so I'm very excited to be going again in 'Swallow' (the one from the film) this weekend.

Today's challenge, whilst preparing the boat, was to create my first eye splice. Something Captain John would have probably learned from Commander Walker at an early age? In S&A he uses splices when repairing the reef points on Swallow's sail. I think those must have been back splices.

Splices and other weird knots are taught by Old Simon in Coot Club too. Joe critically asseses Tom's eye splice in The Big Six.
