Here in Australia, our inland deserts are covered in small lateritic nodules called 'gibbers' (pron; ghibbers). I also find listening to speech on British TV dramas difficult, but I think that this is because they use odd words (it took years to find out what 'manky' meant) and partly because they speak so quickly , but I listen slowly.
