Interesting review. Would there ever be a book published comparing all three sets of illustrations, the ones Mr. Ransome rejected, the ones he did not like and his. The maps and map making were of particular interest to me when I first read the books in the late '40's.

I would find (and I would presume others would also) such a comparison quite interesting. Mr. Ransome's illustrations are, to me, the best representations of the stories.

At that time I made various maps (about 18 inches square) of imaginary sites with ink on tracing paper (I still have them), some with my imaginary adventures of the Swallows and Amazons and others of my own invention. My father would print them out for me on the Ozalid Machine at his office (he was a map draftsman at that time for an oil company).
