Following the earlier "Titanic" thread I reread my copy of Titanic: an illustrated history (Hyperion, 1992). I noticed a photograph of Lifeboat 14 that revealed a mast and stays. It had one of the collapsible lifeboats under tow. Then I discovered another photo, taken by a passenger on the rescue ship, the Carpathia, that clearly shows a lug-sail just like Swallow's.
Lifeboat 14 contained 54 women, four children and one seaman, Joseph Scarrott, who must have raised the mast and sail practically single-handed.
I wonder if he was really Jim Turner working under an alias.
