Don/Mastadon lives locally as he says when he first meets the Swallows “My father’s got a Kraal too. Over there” and I had put it down as a farm like the first Kraal where they get milk from (SW8). He is living in the Speedy when they meet (in the holidays), but I imagine that he would be going to school and would not necessarily live there in term time. He appears to be younger than John.

PS re Michael Caine, the article below says about his first starring role in “Zulu” (1964), that he had applied for the role of a cockney private. That role was taken, and Endfield offered him the leading role of an upper class lieutenant, saying he looked more like an officer and Caine saying he could do a posh accent.
