The Mesopotamians had their eponymous two rivers, the Egyptians their Nile. The Chinese had the Yangstse and the South east Asians had the Mekong. While the Greeks did not have a major river, they had the Mediterranean and all the islands so close together in the Aegean.
That reminds me of a passage from a very funny book called Mathematics Made Difficult by Carl E. Linderholm. (At least, it's funny if you've studied pure maths to degree level.) It goes something like this:
"Great civilisations grow up alongside great rivers: the Indus, the Euphrates, the Cam."
