You guess wrong, Peter, if you are claiming that the Collingwoods were "pretty well off". Taqui Altounyan, who obviously knew the Collingwood family far better than we do, wrote:
"The Collingwoods never had much money, but Miss Emma Holt, of the Liverpool shipping line, gave them Lanehead to live in, rent free."
Emma Holt (the visual model for the G.A.) was an exceptionally generous person and is known for that in Liverpool to this day. It really is a mistake to force people into social stereotypes - things ain't that simple.
