For island aficionados, Looe Island (aka St. George's Island) just off the Cornish coast would have been more realistic, at least for British Tarboarders. This 22 acre island was owned and occupied by two old ladies until they died in 1997 and 2004. It is now a nature reserve.
The former owners wrote a book (which I haven't read but I'm tempted) about their experiences. See Wikipedia under Looe Island for more information.
