Islands are pretty common in Canadian waters both salt and fresh and uninhabited ones or ones with just a single cottage dwelling on are not uncommon either. In Georgian Bay we have the Thirty Thousand Islands (some of which are really only large rocks) and a good number of them have just a single cottage perched on a smallish rocky island.
There are a number of problems in accessing them or leaving again if the weather is not so pleasant as our lakes are so big that they can kick up a good size swell in windy weather. It is sometimes easier to get to your island in winter when you can drive or snowmobile across the ice.
One of our friends built a cottage on a larger island in Lake Simcoe just north of Toronto which has other cottages and they drove a lot of the lighter material across the ice in a pickup truck rather than waiting for the ice to melt and barge it in.
