The story about a hot pot melting its way through the frozen lake also occurs in a biography of Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley written by his widow Eleanor. Canon Rawnsley was a close friend of John Ruskin and W G Collingwood, and this story may have reached AR via the Collingwood family. However, the 'hot pot' tale occurs elsewhere also. It probably did happen somewhere at some time, but I think it has become apocryphal.
