Nancy is clearly wearing a beret in PP. AR even shows the 'stalk'. And all the girls are wearing berets in WH.
I showed the drawing of Nancy in 'Loading Captain Flint' to a non-Ransomite friend and asked what Nancy was wearing, and she said immediately a beret!
Stocking caps very often had a 'tail' and tassel. In 'Ransome the Artist' there is a page of drawings for the Amazons' stocking caps.
In 'In Search of SA' there is a much better reproduction of the launching Scarab drawing and it seems to be they could very well be wearing berets pulled to one side.
Great, though the 1974 film is, the Amazons' caps look poor to me, whereas the 1963 BBC series has Nancy in a lovely stocking cap just right (pity it is striped1)
