They are quite common here in Ontario, though a bit less often seen now that they have been taken off the new $20 note. We still carry loonies, $1 coins, around in our pockets and many of our lakes have a nesting pair or two whose calls are an integral part of many people's cottage experience.
Apparently the confusion because of the two names for the same species, the UK calls it the Great Northern Diver and North Americans call it the Common Loon, has led the "International Ornithological Committee", the authorities who name birds, to call it officially the Great Northern Loon.
