In spite of growing up in the western suburbs of London, I was given plenty of freedom
by my parents to roam on my bicycle from age 10 onwards, for which I will always be
very grateful.
My destination was usually some section of the Grand Union Canal which was as close
as I got to water and boats in those early days.
It seems that things have got worse since John was accused of burglary by Sammy
Lewthwaite. Today's youngsters have the odds stacked very much against them.
