That's what I mean when I say AR didn't really care, and put the chimneys in the kind of places that he saw them round about. But certainly with no particular house in mind, and certainly with no thought for the structural points that you quite rightly raise.
Bad form to comment on my own post but... I should have added, in support of the idea that AR really didn't care, the total disparity between his illustrations of Beckfoor in two drawings in PM;.p.115, 'Lookout on the Ridge' and p.263, 'At the Beckfoot Gate' The second illustration is quite like the sketch, the first one quite different.
