It looks to me as though it's just a boilerplate audition script for the potential actors to respond to. Although, John being a spy does fit with the other bit about CF's trunk containing not the manuscript of Mixed Moss- presumably a travel/autobiography book, in the Racundra's First Cruise line, a very common and popular genre at the time- but 'secret diplomatic papers'- CF as a contemporary Snowden, in which case John of course could be an agent set to recover them.
It seems unlikely stuff to me, but might be a clever wheeze to suck in AR's own 'alternate life'. Diamond smuggler to the Bolsheviks after all... Intelligence Service debriefings. Trotsky's secretary on side... Not in the books, but there in real life.
