The British Library Newspaper Collection at Colindale closed at the end of last year, without much publicity even to members of the Library. I found out only by travelling there to do some research and being told by the porter! It is being transferred to a new purpose-built facility in north Yorkshire. The material that was already available there on computers can now be accessed at the British Library in St. Pancras; to do this one needs a BL membership card. I was told that the rest of the collection (microfilm, etc) will gradually become available when the new site is completed - one of the reasons why I shelved plans for researching the Daily News despatches.
On another point, both The Times and The Daily Telegraph today carried obituaries for Norman Willis, the former President of The Arthur Ransome Society.
