I am inducting my 6 year old granddaughter into the cult, I mean introducing her to the delights of AR, by watching a DVD of the film. It occurred to me for the first time how strange a custom the Billies' adder is. All the references I could find about charcoal burners and snakes took me back to AR, except for a line in a bibliography of folk-lore.
Does anyone know anything about this custom? Have any AR scholars written about it?
