Some fears are common in childhood and people seem to grow out of them. But I agree phobias are irrelevant in this topic.

I recall another example now: "Titty, privately, was being a cormorant."

It is written that Joe/Bill/Pete give up "piracy" (which they can only have played at) for salvage (as a proper occupation). But they do still talk about themselves as "engines" when rowing.

So we have plenty of examples of Roger playing around, which makes sense as he's the youngest. Titty too. Are John/Susan/Nancy/Peggy/Dorothea immune to all this? I know Dick is!

I present all this alongside two observations about children I know. My own daughters are 11 and are capable of simultaneously asking for a touch-screen mobile phone for Christmas, and still wanting to voice the antics of small plastic ponies in a castle. My mother-in-law told me she had a dolly in a pram for her 12th birthday. Times have changed...but underneath I think the desire to play is still there.
