But this was 1936, and although tourism was well developed (when has it not been- ask at Lourdes) buying souvenirs of that kind wasn't 'serious'.
I remember visiting any number of churches with my parents, shortly after the war, but that was 'kultur' which wooden shoes were not. AR may have felt the same.
