My 10th Ed. (1956) Cape PM has "walls". I rather expect that they scanned the text and relied on auto-correct to catch misread letters, though with computerized print systems these days I'd hope that publishers had access to applications that would convert from the computerized typesetting file to an epub or other e-book format.
