: What is the name of the typeface used in the Amazons
: and Swallows series? I would like to have my boat name
: printed. I particularly like the typeface used in the
: Godine paperbacks.

I have queried my Resident Calligrapher and Font Expert about the covers for the Godine paperbacks. She agrees (with an earlier posting) that these covers were calligraphed, and points out (for example) the differences in the capital "W" between WDMTGTS, WH, and SW.

She (Susan) adds that you can get very close with Zapf Chancery Italic fonts, of which there are a large variety of weights. Probably none will be "exactly" the covers, but then, the covers aren't exact from one to the next. She will help find a ZCI that is as close as possible when she returns from Missouri after 10 June if you wish. She also adds that if TARS in general wanted this font as a "resident" font, she could design and implement a very specific font using the examples in the Godine covers and make it electronically available (one of her hobbies is designing typefaces).

On the other hand, if you just want the name of your boat appropriately calligraphed in that calligraphic style in a size appropriate for transfer as a stencil for your boat, she could do that for you without worrying about creating a font; Susan is a lay member of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators and a very good calligrapher. Just give me a bit of time to work on her
