John - thanks. It is rare to get support on Tarboard and I am grateful. I say that at the risk of getting the 'hope you'll be happy together' snide comments. But I agree with Duncan about total freedom to express opinions. Where I come in is that, yes, we are all perfectly free to give our own opinions on the type of people the Blacketts were, and as to how Mrs Blackett inherited Beckfoot, and as to how Bob Blackett died etc. However there can be no place for 'opinions' on the matter of the land law in England at the time. This is ascertainable from the Acts of Parliament in force then. Women were not obliged to hand over their property to their husbands on marriage. That's it. Nor have I heard of any 'habit' or 'custom' whereby they would do so. To suggest that English women would meekly obey any such 'custom' is ludicrous and rather patronising. Now let's have an end to this business and get on with the Ransome side of it all.
