Tonnage

I understand in the U.K. pleasure craft, as well as other vessels, are measured according to their displacement. In North America, pleasure craft are rated by their overall length. Is there any easy rule of thumb to estimate the length from the given tonnage? I have read many books about half ton, two ton boats, but haven't got the least idea what size they might be. I'm talking here about sailing boats, but I think power boats apply too.
