In all the times I have read SA it has never occurred to me that John went ashore in a state of nature. Re-reading the passage today I agree that "bathers" are nowhere mentioned. However, I note also that there is no mention of his removing pyjamas, which we know they always wore at night. Maybe AR just didn't bother to go into every detail. I suggest the nude row is possible, but not proven.
