There are only two stories that mention the microscope: Picts and Martyrs, and Winter Holiday. The microscope belongs to Dick (of course) and is with him on both of these occasions, but none other.
It seems that the only time he actually USED it was in Winter Holiday, when it first started snowing, that he put a snowflake under the microscope to see its detail. In PM, he had it at the Dogs' Home, where he kept it up on the mantle over the fireplace, but never used it. It seems he had it, as a "just in case" item, but really did not have any real use for it. But then, as part of his reputation as "the professor" (after PP) I suppose he had to have it with him. Not sure really just why he felt the need to have this item with him, but it certainly did not get that much use.

Maybe I have missed it, but did that microscope come into play any where else? Without actually looking it up, I would have suspected it to be with him in BS, as they were being detectives, but then, when they packed to go forth on this holiday, it was not known at that time their skills as detectives would be called upon. However, even if he had had a microscope with him in BS, there is no real need for its usage there.

I believe there was a microscope in Uncle Jim's study, but it was never accessed.

(Boy, the FORUM sure has been quiet for several days...)
