Well John used to keep his books on seamanship in the tin box. The aneroid barometer in the box was useful in forecasting the storm at the end of the book with a large drop, but the books were those that John liked to look at without necessarily being useful on the lake! Dick had a book on sailing of course.

PS: fettle has an archaic meaning of “to put in order or put a finishing touch to”, which is not quite what AR meant when he was using it as a local dialect word for making something!
