Dear All
I've finally got around to sorting out my Tarboard access -successfully, if you are reading this.
The Guardian article can be accessed at www.guardian.co.uk. Go to Archives for Feb 26 and type in Ellen MacArthur, which will give you the Birkett piece, and another more interesting one. What I commented to Peter H was as follows:
Peter
Thanks for drawing my attention to that. It does appear to be off-the-wall gibberish, and very little to do with Ellen - eithter the real one or the one Birkett has concocted inside her head. I'm not sure Ellen has a philosophy, or if she does it is a very lghtweight piece of icing on the substantial cake of her insatiable appetite for action and achievement, and the example and inspiration this represents.
Of course self-esteem is not always enough in itself, and there are many obsatacles it cannot conquer. But lack of self-esteem is what drives people towards negative and self-destructive life choices. As for Birkett's brother-in-law, believing he would survive, and summoning the determination to do so, presumably gave the last period of his life some bearability and dignity it would not otherwise have had.
Not that this has much to do with Ellen. I've just finished reading her book - she was just coping with the aftermath of the Vendee, so to speak, when the mast came down. There is nothing uncomplicated about who she is or what she does.
I'm at present pondering on what she will, or should do next, as is she, apparently, according to one of her post-dismasting missives to www.kingfisherchalleges.com - which I recommend to you and all.
