Goddling

I am reading Picts and Martyrs for the first time and am having some trouble with Jackie's accent. What word is goddling (the process of tickeling the trout)? Has anyone ever tried it? Here in Pennsylvania, the fish warden would probobly frown on this practice, but I still may try it. I wonder if it would work for small lake fish as well.
