Interestingly enough, although the oficial name is now Beijing (which I have been told means "Great Capital" or "Big Capital"), apparently there are two institutions or entities which retain "Peking" as their name. One is Peking University; when I taught a seminar there in 1998, I was told that as it had had the name Peking University for over a hundred years it was allowed to keep the name. I was never told what the other legitimate "Peking" is - unless it's Peking Duck.
