On the subject of maps some people may be interested in a book I came across the other day. It is an A4 collection of hand drawn maps of all the lakes in the Lake District, produced in the style of Wainwright's maps of the fells. On the cover it says something to the effect that the maps were produced after extensive exploration on foot and by canoe. To give you some idea of the scale Coniston Water covers three pages. The author has read AR as there are little AR symbols at Peel Island and some explanatory notes.
It is very pretty and I am busy thinking up an excuse to acquire it. Great for those who know the Lakes but prehaps even better for those who are trying to imagine them and find those pernickety littel details so intriguingly elusive.
Here is the publisher's blurb:
Atlas of the Lakes(Reference #1852843551)
This unique set of detailed and definitive charts portrays the seventeen lakes that characterise Britain's favourite National Park. There are over 124 miles of shoreline for exploration by canoe or boat. For ramblers, there are over 150 miles to trace on paths, tracks and minor roads. Many shoreline paths have been established in recent years. Public transport and accommodation details are provided for each group of lakes. Parking, launching and catering facilities, plus access areas are clearly featured. This intriguing record will be an informative companion to any lover of Lakeland, and provide a wonderful reminder of the Lakes for any visitor. Due end July.(2002)
