As to BB, I agree the odds are that he fought in WW1, but I cannot see why everyone is convinced he was an officer. He might have been, but we simply don't know.
I suspect that one of the reasons for resistance to BB being an officer in this discussion is the phrase 'officer class'. To me, that expression has a built-in sneer.
