Yes, I agree with Mike Dennis's summary of the 'class' position. It is always difficult to explain the emotions which the topic arouses in the UK to people across the Atlantic. The irony is that class distinctions portrayed in the arts, principally the cinema, are there to appeal to the American market, because that is what the Americans expect from us - Gosford Park is a good example. And on the other hand, there is an academic industry based on class - there are 'Class Studies' in most Sociological Departments of English Universities. The result is that class awareness is being perpetuated.

I emphasise that I am not denying the scientific validity of sociology. It is a science like any other and has its uses. I am not a 'flat earther' in this. Anyway, I think that's enough 'class' for now - back to the lifeboat conversion . . .
