Peter H has a good point, here in the UK being middle class is not something to be proud of even you are part of that class and proud of it. Part of the problem stems from it being something of an invented class rather than one that has evolved. If you back to surfdom it was simple - servants and masters. Usually the masters had inherited wealth and so it went on, then when the industrial revoloution came along we had a new class of people who gained wealth by work etc. This new group were despised by the working class (they were richer) and by the upper class (they had money but none of the traditions etc.) so they were stuck in the middle disliked by those on each side!

I realise this is simplistic version of UK class history but I hope to those of you outside the UK you can see why this class debate does provoke different reactions!
