Thank you, Peter, for a most enlightening explanation, but it still seems screwy to me. Why wouldn't the middle class be proud of it? Maybe it's different in the U.K., but in Canada most people in the middle class got there because of hard work, careful investment, sacrifice and the exercise of good judgement and common sense. Can't see anything there to be guilty about. If someone is working class and proud of it wouldn't that mean he's content to stay there? So why should he have resented you because he considered you to be middle class? I would have thought the working class should feel guilty for criticizing middle class people for having the virtues of hard work, etc. There seems to be a lack of logic here. If secetly they really envy the middle class, why don't they put those virtues into practice themselves and become middle class too? Don't tell me that in England there are still unsuperable class barriers!
