I enjoy the literary symmetry of Dorethea’s finding Riddle of the Sands on Captain Flint’s bookshelf, since the finding of a book on Dulcibella’s bookshelf plays a pivotal role (twice!) in Childers’ book. I don’t know about any of you, but I often find myself scanning bookshelves when I enter someone’s home for the first time. What a lot our books tell about us.
