I agree with Patrick that its a shame that the paperbacks use illustrations that show the characters faces in too much detail. They don't look at all as I have always imagined them. In my Red Fox edition of Great Northen? I found it very difficult to tell who was who on the cover illustration: I don't ever have that problem with AR's own illustrations.
Red Fox don't sem to be the only ones to do this. I think some Puffin editions had commissioned cover illustrations too. I borrowed a Puffin edition of Secret Water to read to my six year old son. The cover shows the Swallows and Amazons sitting round the fire when they see the first rocket. Captain John looks much too young and I was convinced that the person sitting in Captain Nancy's place was Mate Susan. Captain Nancy's stocking cap had become a sort of drab grey tea cosy and the look of bewilderment on her face was not what I would expect of the Terror of the Seas!
