Very interesting about the Russian equivalent of "once in a blue moon", but at least a blue moon actually occurs while I'd be quite surprised to hear that Russian shrimp whistle. Their lips appear to be woefully ill-designed for the task.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Margery Allingham mysteries, The Fear Sign (also published as Sweet Danger or Kingdom of Death) in which the locals in the village where most of the action takes place have a saying "when the great bell tolls again" (or something to that effect). The saying, which means roughly "when hell freezes over" refers to a bell that was housed in the manor house but was destroyed in a fire many years previous and thus tolls no more.
