Is it possible that the first visit to the lake is the catalyst for going camping? Maybe their earlier holidays had been with both their parents when their father took command, and considering he was probably away at sea a fair amount of their lives, until Swallows & Amazons, they'd been considered too young.From the later books - when he was home they did sailing-type holidays anyway.
Reading between the lines, camping had been a desirable idea but not achievable or even possible until then.
