Considering their knowledge base, they have been camping a number of times. They simply know too much about camping, sailing, and outdoor living to have never experienced the outdoor world.

Pure speculation, but I would suspect that the family went sailing and camping every time Commander Walker was home on leave, which for someone with five children, appeared to be rather often.

What I suspect is a new experience for the children is camping alone and not with Mother or the Commander along on the trip.
