Surely Commander Walker as a sailor simply made the most of his limited opportunities.

Consider the end of WD, how he contrives to go ashore with Mary within minutes of his arrival at the mooring, leaving his entire family busily occupied aboard the Goblin.....

And having seen at the AGM how small is Alma Cottage and how thin are the walls, he had good reason....
