In one of the books the stone is described as gray.
I thouhgt Enlgish slate was black or is it also gray.

Lake District slate is grey or green.

Kendal is still known as the "old grey town"
Honister Slate Mine has an offer on for its green slate.

"FILL YA BOOT £10
Finish your kitchen, patio or garden with Westmorland Green Slate - as much as you can put in your car boot for just £10!"

I could not get the pop pop boat link to work.
