In notes scribbled from Hugh Shelley's "Arthur Ransome," I find that he considered "Great Northern?" "as good as any of its predecessors and some consider it better than any of them." While I don't necessarily agree (I regard it as out of sync with the rest of the series), I think each of us has his own favorite for personal reasons.

And that's all that matters.

I was introduced to the series with "Secret Water" which, as Shelley opines, "is about nothing more exciting than surveying." Nevertheless, reading SW led me to read and later acquire the complete set. For the life of me, however, I cannot get into either "Coot Club" or "The Big Six."
