This may be a wee bit technical, but does anyone have any info on the spar dimensions of a standing lug rig for a 14' sailing skiff (dinghy)? I have a 110-year-old lapstrake skiff I'm beginning to think about restoring, and am collecting technical info on the lug rig. I've been sailing gaff rig all my life, and have worked professionally as a rigger at Mystic Seaport, so I can manage the traditional basics of construction and operation, but I don't know much about the proportions of yard and mast in standing lug.

My sister has just bought a Sid Skiff, which is almost identical to my project boat --but it has a loose-footed sprit rig, which I'm not so fond of, so I can't plagiarize. (Though we just rigged the Sid Skiff last night, and she looks like she'll be a tremendous amount of fun.) I can, however, tell that the mast needs to be about 12' long to fit inside the boat. I can doodle any number of different attractive rigs from this starting point, but is there a standard ratio of yard-to-mast length, and how much of the yard is forward of the mast?

Any favorite reference books and/or personal knowledge would be handy.

Many thanks,
Alex
