At the risk of putting words in Lawrence's mouth, by "Marxist nonsense" he might have been thinking of the results of applied Marxism in many countries: China, Soviet Union, etc. Or perhaps he was referring to the theories of Marxism, which, even these days, still impress a lot of people.
Just a thought. But let Lawrence speak for himself.
