Seemed that way to me, too. Some folk do tie --or splice, for that matter-- an eye in one end of the points (often called "nettles" on this side of the pond), and use it as purchase for snugging the bunt of sail tight, finishing off with a single slippery hitch. I've just never heard of that being done on something as small as a dinghy, and it didn't correspond with the following descriptions.

As for your thirty-year-past experience, I just last week took delivery of my sloop's new sails and tied in the nettles just as you once did. Heck, that's the way I was taught...
