Dear Mike,

Source of a Stream, this is the headwaters as the water flows downstream from the source. If I remember my geography carefully an American guy from the Chesapeake Bay worked out the idea of head waters.

Most lakes have contaminated supply flowing in, the main idea is to give the water sufficient time to disperse the contaminents with sufficient dilution, sunlight and oxygen. The English waters would be coldish which suspends a lot more O2, hence the water is aerobic which works faster than anaerobic or oxygen low water. The water is tumbling which helps a lot.

Do not forget that a lot of houses would use roof water, and this has bird crap etc all through it. yet we drink it straight up. I heard of some roof water being tested at a winery and failing badly, but we still drank it all the time.

What about the fish that swim and live and do all things in water. As my brother used to say when asked why he did not drink water he always responded that he had trouble with the concept of drinking a liquid that some fish may have procreated in. He said it gave him his reason to drink whiskey. Hard to argue with him on that.
