Now I'm really going to put someone off their tea. Melbourne Water have a number of disribution reservoirs scattered around the metropolitan area [approximately 2000 square miles]. They act as a sort of shock-absorber in the system. These were, until quite recently, open to the sky. They were surrounded by belts of cypress trees, which were there to catch windborne dust. They also provided birds with a habitat, and we all know what birds do indiscriminately. They also would fall in and drown. These reservoirs are now all roofed over.
